Learn More About Time-Stopper
Aided by an ability to stop time at will, David Preston intends to find out. David is obsessed with making his world perfect: career, love life—everything. Most people settle for less because they know perfection is impossible. But David has a problem: He believes perfection is not just possible but attainable. At least, for someone with his extraordinary gift.
David can stop time at will for everyone but himself. The world freezes around him, giving him “time” to complete tasks on impossible deadlines, compose brilliant answers to sudden questions, and dodge the otherwise unavoidable disasters we can see coming but are powerless to stop.
But life is messier than it appears, and reality is not easily dissuaded—especially when David discovers he may not be the only one who can stop time…
About James Young

This is James Young’s first foray into fiction. He has spent over three decades in and around D.C. politics immersed in economic and policy legislation. Alongside degrees from the University of Chicago (B.A.) and Cornell University (M.A., Ph.D.), Young’s writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, Washington Examiner, The Hill, American Spectator, The Federalist, Washington Post, New York Post, Barron’s, Forbes, Chicago Tribune, Townhall, Blaze Media, San Francisco Chronicle, Cleveland Plain Dealer, and elsewhere.
In his early days, James was Kipling’s “cat who walked by himself,” working in a steel mill, sailing on the Great Lakes’ iron ore boats, tending bar, riding motorcycles, scuba diving, traveling extensively worldwide, and “doing all manner of things that would have consumed fully eight of the Kipling cat’s nine lives.” He is spending his remaining life more sedately, though still traveling with his family to America’s national parks—with only the occasional exotic foray here and there.

Praise for Time-Stopper
“If you could stop time for everyone but yourself, would you do it? Imagine the power you would have—acting to get things done while everyone else was frozen. You could get what you wanted and improve the world. In Time-Stopper, David Preston finds that he can stop time—and does. But things don’t work out as he envisioned in this fascinating, allegorical novel.”
George Leef, Novelist and Author of The Awakening of Jennifer Van Arsdale
“James Young’s debut is a smart, surprising exploration of our obsession with control. What begins as a clever premise—a man who can stop time at will—becomes a poignant meditation on perfectionism, loss, and learning to embrace life’s beautiful messiness. Young brings his insider knowledge of D.C. politics to create an authentic world where the fantastical feels grounded and real. Time-Stopper is that rare novel that’s both thought-provoking and genuinely moving—a remarkable first book from a writer with a distinctive voice and keen insight into what makes us human.”
Patricia Fors, CEO of Muse Literary Publishing
“Time-Stopper is an outstanding premier novel, rich in character development and insights into the legislative sausage-making process. James Young’s first foray into fiction leavens a story of personal tragedy and K Street intrigue with a clever and original sci-fi twist—two people who discover their ability to stop time to their advantage. A page-turner that will keep readers engaged throughout to see what happens next. A winner!”
